Youth Participation Project

Yarrawonga College P-12 involved in national program around Youth participation in Sport.

Our College is fortunate to be involved in a Australian Sports Commission Initiative: the Youth Participation Project. (YPP)

Introduction

The Australian Sports Commission’s (ASC) Youth Participation Project (YPP) seeks to identify and address the barriers to sports participation for youth (13-17 years old) in the school setting through the delivery of a Secondary School Pilot program. The pilot program will involve 80 schools nationally, commencing in Term 2, 2016 running through until Term 2, 2017, and is being delivered as part of the ASC’s Sporting Schools program.

Project aim

The Youth Participation Project will work with National Sporting Organisations (NSOs), schools, parents and student bodies to look at the barriers to participation that exist, why the barriers exist, and to test methods for overcoming them. The YPP’s Secondary School Pilot program will assist schools and sports with program design and provide a platform for developing strategies that address the youth participation cliff through targeting low to non-participants in Health and Physical Education (HPE).

As a result we have been paired with Athletics Australia and have a qualified coach delivering five sessions based around the Fundamental Motor Skills of Athletics, with the activities developing team work and initiative. These will be delivered to Year 7 and 9 in Term Three and Year 8 in Term Four.

As an extension of this students from these year levels will be targeted and offered intensive support incorporating a program developed in conjunction with Focus Gym.

More information around this will be provided to the students identified.

Parent Survey

Your child’s school is currently being funded to run a sports program with the Australian Sports Commission Youth Participation Project. This program aims to better understand how sport can be best delivered in Secondary Schools, and we interested in getting your opinions about your child’s sport and your sport engagement, and also surveying your child with your consent.

We would like to invite you to complete a 15 minute survey (you do not need to compete in sport to complete the survey). You can complete the survey by clicking on this link or copy and pasting it into your web browser:

http://surveys.intuitivesolutions.com.au/s3/ASC-Youth-Participation-In-Sport-Research-Parents-1

When you complete the survey, you will have the opportunity to enter the draw for one of seven Coles/Myer Gift Vouchers (1 x $1000; 1 x $250 or 5 x $50).

During the next 15 months that the program is delivered in your school, we would also like to survey your child about their sport engagement. Participation is entirely voluntary, and should not inconvenience you or your child. You and your child’s feedback will offer valuable insight into the how sport programs can be most effectively delivered to engage students in the secondary school environment.

Further details about the research can be found here in the ASC Sport Program Parent-Guardian Survey which provides you the opportunity to OPT-OUT your child from these surveys.  You can complete this form and/or email it back to the school or send to the school with your child.
